In 2020, Japan imported goods worth USD 635.53 billion. This rose to USD 768.98 billionin 2021. The value of goods exported from Japan also rose from 2020 to 2021, from USD 6,411.32 billion in 2020 to a whopping USD 756.03 billion in 2021.
Japan is known as an up-and-coming industrialised nation with which German and European companies have enjoyed good business relations for decades. The fact that Japan has the world's highest gross national product after the USA emphasises the island nation's great ambitions. Particularly sought-after imported goods from Japan are cars, electrical appliances and computers, which are recognised all over the world due to their first-class price-performance ratio and are therefore imported.
The Southeast Asian island state has developed into an established trading partner with great potential. It is not without reason that the European Union negotiated a free trade agreement with Japan in 2019, which aims to boost imports and exports through certain deregulatory measures. However, the import of Japanese goods is still not running smoothly in some places, which is partly due to the continuing hurdles in determining origin. As an experienced Japan importer, we therefore support you in importing Japanese goods - from customs clearance to reliable logistics by air or sea freight.
Since 2019, there has been a bilateral agreement between the European Union and the economic nation of Japan that makes importing Japanese goods less complicated, more efficient and more cost-effective. Among other things, the economic and partnership agreement includes a comprehensive reduction in customs duties, which allows duty-free imports of Japanese goods under certain conditions. It is important that the products to be imported actually originate from Japan and demonstrably fulfil the four specified origin criteria.
The bilateral economic agreement between Japan and the EU, which affects more than 30 percent of total world trade, has created a new economic zone that is considered to be the largest in the world. If you have any questions about the current trade and customs regulations in connection with Japan or are unclear about the agreement, we will be happy to assist you as an expert Japan importer.

Both sea freight and air freight are available for importing Japanese goods. As an international port city, Hamburg is a leading location for importing Japan by ocean freight. The island state of Japan also has numerous ports that are served by us or a feeder service from our international partner network. While we maintain a direct connection to the ports of Tokyo, Kobe and Nagoja, we also have first-class links to the ports of Hakata/Fukuota, Osaka, Yokohama and Shimizu thanks to our feeder services. When transporting non-perishable goods such as machinery and automobiles, which are the most important imported goods from Japan, ocean freight offers a particularly good price-performance ratio.
If time is of the essence, we can realise your importing from Japan by air freight. Our decades of experience in the field of air freight forwarding and a professional network of Japanese partners enable us to maximise speed and reliability. Rapid goods handling, multimodal offers for onward transport and first-class security standards are further advantages of importing from Japan by air freight and can therefore be handled with ease.
